I learned today via the Mountain Rose Herbs blog that United Plant Savers has started a petition to ensure protection of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), an at-risk North American medicinal plant like goldenseal and echinacea. Wild stands of American ginseng are increasingly threatened by poachers. The petition is directed to the Chief of USDA Forest Service, the Director of US Fish and Wildlife Services, the Secretary of Agriculture, and the Presidential Task Force on Wildlife Trafficking, and asks that funds be dedicated to ensure the survival of this important medicinal plant, as well as the rural communities that depend upon it economically.
